Overall, a great location. The pictures represent the space well. It was quiet and clean. Close enough to walk to breakfast or coffee in the morning. No real beachfront, but that was made clear in the property description. The TVs were definitely on the small side and we never got them to work, but we were too busy exploring the area to really care. I highly recommend, it was a great location for my husband and my two elementary school age children and I.

We loved sitting on the lanai and watching the whales. We usually stay at a more secluded area of the island so we really enjoyed being able to walk to some cafes and coffee shops. The food truck park was a big hit for our group too. One note - my personal experience is that rentals on VRBO often don't come with as many amenities. This one had a large number of bathrooom towels which was an unexpected bonus - but you'll need paper towels and trash bags, dishwasher detergent, etc. (There will be enough for your first day or two)This isn't uncommon in other Maui rentals - but it's nice to know ahead of time. Plus, don't expect any type of shampoo/bodywash.

If you’re going to spend your hard earned money, it’s only fair that you get an honest review. We had seen 100+ reviews here and they were all amazing reviews, so we thought we were booking a great stay. Please continue to read for a real and honest review.
1- Cockroaches. There were different bugs just about every night. This alone is a deal breaker and should be noted in the reviews. We made sure we took videos of the bugs so we had proof.
2- We have small children and the first night our key code didn’t work so we had to book another hotel. We had messaged the host and she eventually responded but we had booked a hotel prior to the response for the night. After her telling me I was wrong about the code, we showed up the next day and the door code STILL didn’t work. The host had us call a number for one of the other managers to get his door code, which worked immediately. Host didn’t want to own up about the code not working.
3- There was NO beach!! If you have kids or family that likes the beach, this will be a terrible location. There’s literally a sea wall that the waves slam into 24/7. The beach across the waterway (in front of other hotel) was about a 10’ beach. The pictures are deceiving (host has a picture of a couple getting married on the beach). You can either go to the pool or sit on the patio at this hotel. With kids in our family, the beach is a necessity for fun and this host made it seem like there is actually a beach here.

This condo was everything I hoped it would be. The views amazing looking out over the ocean, every night we enjoyed the gorgeous sunsets from the lanai and during the day the whales were happily playing! And the sounds of the ocean were the only music we needed! We appreciated the beach chairs, beach towels and other beach toys. Papakea Resort is walking distance to shopping, the beach walk, beaches and plenty of restaurants. A quick drive to Whaler’s for more shopping and good restaurants. The grounds are well maintained, and there are barbecues available.
We look forward to our next trip to Maui and stay in this wonderful condo.

Clean condo with all you need for a lovely stay in Maui. We’ve stayed at the papakea for over 20 years now… the location and views are unbeatable.
We were able to push the two twin beds together for our kiddos to all sleep in a “king” bed. They had sand toys, boogie boards, snorkel gear, tennis rackets etc to enjoy.
Favorite part was coffee on the lanai with the gorgeous view every morning. Definitely our favorite building to stay in with the access to the water view and grassy area below, as well as easy access to the pool. If our kiddos needed to
Run up and grab something, we could see them the whole time.
Easy communication with the owner. Checkin and our was easy breezy.

We had an amazing stay in this ocean-facing unit! We have stayed at the Papakea property twice before, but never in a unit like this that faces directly out to the ocean. The views morning, noon & night take your breath away. The unit was very clean & well-appointed. Our family of four had plenty of room for the week we were there. The A/C units kept things nice & cool. Walking distance to restaurants & grocery store. We would absolutely stay here again & again. Highly recommend!

The condo is in the perfect location on the property as it’s in the last building close to the large beach at the property next door. Condo is perfectly situated on the water, on the sea wall. The beach is only a few steps away. Great for whale watching and viewing the nearby islands. We had incredible views of the sunset every night.

I can’t put into words how spectacular the views are from the balcony and the master-bedroom. We were there during whale birthing season and saw many momma’s with their babies right from the balcony with a good pair of binoculars. We even saw giant turtles as well. The resort is very beautiful and calming with the singing of the palms and the roaring of the ocean.
About the condo. The condo is very tastefully decorated and the kitchen looks fairly new. We had a couple issues with some of the appliances which were promptly addressed. There were some issues with the quality of pots and pans and silverware, but the owner is very prompt to address any complaints. The owner has fully equipped the condo with snorkeling gear, and other water toys as well as an ice chest and beach chairs for guests to use.
I would overall rate this place 5 star. We were very happy with the quality of everything. Don’t forget to utilize the concierge service for excursions. They were very helpful in getting us reservations last minute.

The Papakea complex is very well located just north of the Kaanapali resorts, and this unit has an excellent oceanfront location with spectacular views. The only thing that prevents us from awarding 5 stars is the twin beds in the second bedroom, which both have pretty hard and uncomfortable mattresses. It also would have been nice to have at least a starter set of shampoo in the showers. Otherwise, a great property!

After having to make a last minute, major change to our fall break vacation (Florida’s recent hurricane) we decided to head to Maui. We are big fans of Kaanapali as well as Wailea. Since we only had a few days to rebook our entire trip, we couldn’t be picky. But it was a miracle that we found this fantastic property available. We were shocked that it was available and so reasonably priced.
First, the pictures do not do the condo justice. It is very nice, it is very clean, well outfitted. I have been to Hawaii, dozens of times, and I have never ever in my life stayed this close to the ocean. The crashing of the waves is so relaxing and the view is so beautiful. You literally could throw a rock from the balcony into the ocean. the view and the balcony are so spectacular that normally on vacation I feel like I am wasting time sitting in the condo. But we found ourselves often sitting in the condo on the balcony reading and listening to music and taking in the sites of Molokai and Lanai.
As for the resort complex itself, it was fantastic. First and foremost the sign of a good resort complex is how well-maintained it is. Everything was so nice, so manicured, so well taken care of. One day it rained in the morning, quite a bit, and when the rain stopped, there were an army of landscapers, making sure that water was pushed off of the sidewalks, any plants or leaves that fell were cleaned up, etc. My son and I especially loved the 12 hole putting course. It was so nice to go out there with a cocktail and music and have some friendly competition. It was also great to use the shuffleboard. Something I have not done since 1978, it was great to introduce my son to shuffleboard on the brand new and well-maintained shuffleboard court.
As far as location, you are in the center of everything. You are between Lahaina and Kapalua. Plenty of restaurants and highly suggest using OpenTable to get reservations as everything is quite busy. There are also plenty of local plate lunch and local food. There is also an open lot with a set of food trucks. The food trucks there used to be much better and now they are just OK… But instead would recommend going to the food trucks over by Safeway about 10 minutes away. Definitely stay away from the food track called Da best pho. 30 minute food wait turned into over an hour.
In any case, the condo is spectacular, in the best building on the property, great staff at the resort, everything was clean.

I am a Lahainaluna high school graduate, and return regularly to Maui for vacations. We have stayed at Papakea many times because we enjoy the beautiful grounds and the location, convenient to restaurants, food trucks, stores, and the Kaanapali beach trail. This was the best unit we have stayed in so far... perfect oceanfront view, wonderful oceanfront bedroom, nicely updated condo, conveniently stocked (including books on Hawaiian plants and fish), and nice property owner who was easy to deal with. We didn't want to leave!

Area restaurants and beaches are amazing and we saw turtles from the balcony every day (and a monk seal one day as well)! We did not visit during whale season but had a very clear view of the calving grounds / Lahaina Roads from the balcony (and living room)!
Our only complaint is that the end of our week came too quickly, so sad to leave!

The only hiccup was one bedroom AC did not work even though property management was notified immediately. The fan worked in that room so acceptable airflow. Otherwise it was great location and relaxing. I would stay again in that location.

The 2 bedroom condo was exactly as described and pictured on the VRBO listing. Clean. Fully appointed. The check-in process was easy and efficient. The view from the third floor ocean front unit is as good as it gets. Convenient to restaurants, coffee shops, and grocery shopping. In addition, the grounds and pools were well maintained. I had an issue with the internet not working the first night. I called in the morning and they had someone there in 10 minutes to get it fixed immediately (turned out to be a loose cable behind a dresser). No complaints with this stay. My only suggestion would be to add some chip clips and a pair of scissors to the cutlery drawer.

We enjoyed our stay at this property immensely. The location was fantastic and with the balcony of the unit being nearly over the water, the views were spectacular. Rachelle was awesome to work with. Great communication and immediately responsive. The overall property was well-maintained and spacious and included plenty of parking. The pools and community areas were immaculate and while access to the ocean is limited to the north and south edge of the property, the beach and snorkeling there were terrific. The unit itself is well-equipped with everything we needed including for our very talented chef/son. Furniture was comfortable and we enjoyed many meals on the lanai. If your biggest complaint is that the pool deck was really hot on bare feet, you know you've found a winner. If we return to Maui, we'd stay here in a heartbeat.

We loved the proximity to the Kaanapali Beach and boardwalk. We never drove to any restaurants since they were all within 2 miles from the condo. Looking out onto the ocean, Molokai and Lana'i in the morning and evening made for a relaxing beginning and end to our day. The sunset would sometimes be too hot to sit out on the lanai, but we would go downstairs onto the grass by the ocean wall, cool off with the Tradewinds, watch the sunset, and later stargaze at the night sky. The waves hitting the ocean wall sometimes got loud at night but shutting the windows and turning on the AC quieted the outside sound.

We found the 3rd floor, ocean front unit, to be very comfortable. The highlight was watching whales from the balcony and simply watching the sea and sunsets. The grounds are meticulously kept up. Pool, spa and bar b q areas are enjoyable, if somewhat limited.
The absence of a restaurant and/or bar-grill on site can be inconvenient, requiring a short walk to adjacent facilities. However, Papakea is a very pleasant environment.
While the units manager was responsive and attentive, being that our unit was an “owner” unit, there was little support from the front desk staff, nor daily housekeeping. The toilet was leaking at the base and toilet seat broken. Plumber came in and repaired. Oven took 30 minutes or more to heat to 375 degrees. Dishwasher does not dry dishes at all on the top rack and leaves undisolved dishwasher residue forcing you to wash off and dry dishes on top rack. Lamp on right side of ocean side bedroom is ready to fall apart. Drawer was broken in back bedroom. Old pizza and box were left in cabinet above refrigerator. Floors were not thoroughly cleaned as my sock were dirty and if water did splash on the floor it was dirty when you wiped it up. The cleaning job on this unit was lacking upon arrival. I really don’t feel we should not be charged a cleaning fee when it was not in great shape when we arrived. Plus, the front bathroom hair dryer quit functioning. The unit manager did promptly provide a replacement.

This property was even better than we had hoped! We checked in and within 3 minutes of being in the condo we saw whales right off the lanai! The condo layout was great and spacious. Everything was updated as represented in the listing. The kitchen was well stocked. The beds were all comfortable. We had a few issues with the AC and the property manager and owner were incredibly responsive.
The Papakea resort was fantastic. The grounds are immaculate. The pool was perfect, hot tub a great add. We especially loved the grills around the pool and the pavilion area. We were a part of a large group and every night we cooked we used the grills and then ate as a group in the Pavilion and enjoyed meeting others doing the same. The grassy area ocean front was almost better than a beach to lay out on and listen to the waves and watch for turtles and whales. The lack of beach was noted but did not take away from our overall enjoyment of the location. We used the beach chairs, umbrella, towels and cooler provided as we explored the island and checked out the awesome beaches close by.
The location couldn't be better! Lower Honokowai Rd has a feel of a real neighborhood, not just a tourist center. Being so close to Fish Market Maui, the food truck pod, ABC store and Farmers Market Maui made eating at or around the condo excellent. It's 5-8 minutes to North Kaanapali and 15 minutes to Lahaina.
Finding the right place to stay on Maui is always a delicate balance between amenities, location and budget. This condo was the exactly right balance for us and we will definitely stay here again and would whole heartedly recommend it to others!

This condo has the most amazing views and the sound of the ocean is so relaxing.... The resort location is fantastic - easy to walk to many restaurants and shops. And it is easy driving north to Napili and Kapaula Bay or south to Black Rock. The condo was very clean and the kitchen and bathrooms have been nicely updated. The owner was friendly and very responsive. The furniture and bedding could use updating. But overall a great place to stay.

We wanted a place to unwind and celebrate our own anniversary as well as to attend and celebrate our son's wedding. It was a great getaway. Very relaxing. The property has beautiful grounds with lots of activity options for young and old. It is a large complex but the way the buildings are positioned it did not feel crowded. Multiple bbq grills for those who would like to cook, eat and lounge near the pool area. Groceries, food truck as well as a few restaurants are within walking distance. Close to restaurants, grocery stores as well as great water sports options. Love the large number of turtles that swam in front of the property everyday as well as the wonderful sunsets.

We loved our stay here! Perfect for our family of 5 and we loved being RIGHT on the water! We traveled here with other family who stayed in the same building (L) which is the perfect location. We loved listening to the waves and our patio was used often each morning and night. We could be on the beach in a few short minutes! The complex was gorgeous, loved grilling by the pool while the kids swam. The condo had everything we needed. It felt clean and the kitchen was complete with all that we needed! I took their info and will definitely stay here again! Book this and you won’t be disappointed. We had a great family vacation!

We had a really lovely time at this condo, which is right on the water. We saw whales from the lanai and went to sleep with the loud but soothing sound of the waves. The resort is large but surprisingly quiet and low-key. The kids enjoyed the pool and we used the barbecues to grill fish from the fish market right down the street. Unfortunately, we encountered a good amount of rain, so we didn't get to use the beach in front of the condo as much as we would have liked. (Instead, we drove south where we found great beaches and more sun.) However, if there had been more sun the beach outside would have been a great place to lay in the sun or play in the sand. On our last day, we had better weather so we walked about 10-15 minutes south and found an impressively large coral reef with very calm snorkeling. When we dunked our heads under the water, we could even vaguely hear the whale songs--very cool! The condo itself was well-equipped and comfortable for two couples and two kids. The only thing that we didn't have but could have used was a Brita pitcher for the fridge. The owner was very helpful and wonderful to work with! For the price we paid, I can't imagine there is a better deal in Maui. Thanks again!

This is our 2nd time staying in your lovely condo, and the 3rd time at Papakea.
View: The view from your condo is spectacular! We watched whales, turtles, and all kinds of water activities from the lanai.
Location: The location is great! We walked to the farmer's market just down the street once or twice a week and picked up fresh fruit and bread sold from the local farmers. Delicious! There are a number of great restaurants close-by when you want to dine out.
Fully Stocked: We loved how your condo comes fully equipped for cooking, and barbequing at the poolside is so easy.
Activities: There are many activities to do, but one of our favorites is the catamaran to Lanai for the day. We went snorkeling at some wonderful beaches to the south, and we enjoyed riding the waves at some of the beaches to the north. The beach at the condo was very pleasant for either snorkeling or swimming.
Overall: Everyone was very nice at Papakea and the grounds were kept immaculate. We so enjoyed sitting on the lanai, going to the beach, and all the other activities. We hope to venture back one day.

We thoroughly enjoyed this spacious, well appointed, completely updated condo. The master bedroom at oceanfront was so beautiful. The surf completely masked any noise at night yielding a peaceful night's sleep. We would love to return! The added details of beach towels, boogie board, snorkeling gear, etc. we're appreciated.

My daughters, husband, and I were so excited when we walked into the lovely condo with an incredible ocean front view. The beds were comfortable and the condo was clean. The decor was nice. It was pleasant to have an air conditioner in the bedrooms at night, although in the middle of the night I turned it off because the temperature was so cool outside. I loved listening to the waves all day and all night.

Wow, can't get any closer to the water! We loved hearing the waves and drinking our coffee in the morning and watching the sea life from our deck. Second morning we were there we watched stingrays feed right next to shore and then the next day whle eating lunch on the deck we saw about 50 dolphins swimming in a line swimming north. We have never seen that before. There are newer resorts but they are not as close to the water as this. Loved the view from the master bedroomThe view was better than the pictures.
This unit was very clean and comfortable and it is well equipped. The kitchen had everything we needed for a few BBQs after we had cocktails on our deck watching the sunset. We also loved Dukes restaurant which was really close.
The resort itself had beautiful gardens and our kids loved the putting greens, shuffle boards and choosing which pool they were going to use.
Owners were great to work with, answered all my questions quickly.

We stayed at Papakea for our destination wedding. Many of our guests also stayed at the Papakea. We chose this resort due to it's great location, beautiful public grounds, and good value. This particular unit was wonderful. The condo was in good shape, and the kitchen was lovely. The Lanai and views are decadent. Much like other guests, we just loved sitting out on the Lanai watching the ocean and enjoying the refreshing ocean breeze. The kitchen had everything we needed. The towels provided for the beach and pool were extremely convenient. We had several bbqs by the pool. The pool cabanas they have are first come first serve, but proved valuable our first night when we hosted a bbq for our wedding guests, and it was sprinkling on and off. Check in and check out was smooth. Parking was never a problem. Again, location was perfect, stores nearby, beaches, restaurants. It was our first ever trip to Hawaii and it was perfect. Rachelle was great to deal with, she was very responsive and everything went smoothly. Would definitely recommend it to others.

This beautiful condo exceeded our expectations! It was comfortable, homey and had all the amenities we needed. The A/C in both bedrooms was a definate plus. We enjoyed the views from the lanai each day, the crashing of the waves, watching sea turtles and of course the beautiful Maui sunsets! It's within walking distance to a farmers market and grocery store. The shopping in Lahaina was awesome, lots of great shops and restaurants. Cool Cat has the best burgers! We enjoyed the zipline in Kaanapali and you have to do the Road to Hana! Rachelle was very helpful and welcoming. We will recommend this condo to everyone and would stay there again.

We stayed at the Papakea condo the second week in May. What a wonderful condo, view and location. The place is fully stocked with everything we needed to cook, clean and play. Our kids (ages 9 and 6) spent a ton of time in the pool. Mornings having coffee on the lanai overlooking the ocean were just perfect. Sunsets were beautiful from the lanai as well. The view is much nicer than the pictures showed and we especially enjoyed having the master bedroom with the ocean view. My wife and friends arrived on Maui the week of April 23, 2011. Was preasently surpriced to see just how nice the unit and was actually more then we expected. The Unit is located within a short drive to Downtown Lahaina and walking distance to the action at other Kaanapali resorts. Papakea where the unit is located is beaufiful, well kept grounds and clean facilities with ocean and mountain views. Beaches are close by and most excurisons will pick you up at Papakea. We will definetely stay at this unit again when we are in Maui.

This was our first time to Maui and what a fantastic time we had. We stayed in a different condo the first week of our stay and this condo the second and by far, this one was much better. It had everything we needed. It was modern and super clean, well stocked with everything you could ask for (even boogie boards, tennis raquets, etc.) along with a great view of the ocean from the lanai, where we saw several whales and many amazing sunsets. Everyone around the complex was friendly and it was fun meeting new people at the BBQs nightly. Convenient location for groceries and restaurants and close to Lahaina's Front Street (my favourite!).

Thanks for sharing your home. This was an awesome condo. The location is perfect, you couldn't be any closer to the ocean! Spectacular sunsets and perfect to watch the turtles, just wish we were there when the whales were. The unit had everything we needed including the tennis rackets & putters. The unit was clean and updated and very comfortable. The air conditioning in both bedrooms was a great plus! We have been to Papakea four times previous and this is by far the best unit we have stayed in and can't wait to come back. Papakea is a very convenient location with grocery, farmers market and places to eat all within walking distance - Java Jazz great for breakfast. Only minutes to Lahaina which is our favorite to shop and eat - love Bubba Gumps and Lahaina Pizza for deep dish pizza. Would definitely recommend staying here. The owners were very helpful and responsive. Thanks again for a great time!

This condo is spectacular in all aspects--updated, air conditioned, comfortable furniture, an incredible beachfront location, and located at a resort with beautiful, well maintained grounds. For the price it far exceeded our expectations. We enjoyed shopping at Whaler's Village and dining at Leilani's at sunset. Across the street Maui Arts and Gifts has beautiful art for sale (we bought photos of turtles) and Pizza Paradiso has excellent mediterranean food. The rainbows and sunsets from the lanai were amazing.
The owner was very responsive and helpful from beginning to end, and responded quickly when we had a question the day we arrived.
I have already recommended this unit to several friends, and we plan to come back.

Our family had a wonderful experience staying in this condo. It was clean, well stocked and had a beautiful view in a quiet building. The unobstructed view from the living room and master bedroom is permanently imprinted in our memory. Our family enjoyed endless hours at the beach and pool. We grilled at the pool every night, played some rounds on the putting course, and the kids loved the koi fish ponds. Thank you for sharing your great space with us, we will be back!

The views and property were exactly as presented in the pictures. The property is well maintained, and very quiet compared to others.
There is little to no beach, but next door is a large beach. The property was clean, there were plenty of towels, and washer/dryer made it easy to maintain. All utensils/blender/toaster etc were in working order.
I would recommend this property to anyone who prefers the ocean sounds - the crashing against the seawall is superb.
It's a 2 mile walk to Whalers, or you can hop the shuttle next door for $1 each way. Great running on the beachwalk, Duke's is 0.5miles away.
Recommend Mama's Fish House in Paia for an expensive, excellent lunch or dinner. The poke and fish selections at Times market are excellent, and it is right across the street. For a kid friendly meal order pizza from Round Table, get coupons online.
The zip line is well worth it, book online to save 10%, at zipline.com. We did the Kaanapali line.

The wife and I spent the most relaxing vacation we've had in years at Steve and Rachelle's condo at Papakea. The unit is located in the "L" building, the best location on the Papakea property. If you love the sound of the ocean, one of the two bedrooms is oceanfront so you'll have many a peaceful dream. The room is 3rd floor so you'll also get great views of Molokai and Lanai while sitting on the balcony. We've been to Pakakea in December so you can also watch the whales there during their annual migration.
We look to save some money over the big hotels, yet still enjoy the charm of Hawaii. The complex has 2 pools, hot tubs and barbeques. We love going to Maui but as you probably know, food is a bit expensive. We ended up barbequing almost every night. There's a nice large market within walking distance.
We highly recommend this particular unit as it is well kept and for those who need it, there is air conditioning in both bedrooms. That is something you don't get in most units. Plans are already being made to return here again.

We have been at the Papakea many times and keep returning, we really love the property and it accomodates our family of 5 beautifully. Of all the rooms we have stayed in, this was by far the best! The location, the views, and especially the way the room is set up with the master bedroom facing the ocean can't be beat! The owners were prompt in our communications and very easy to work with, not to mention friendly!
We love the town of Lahaina and always spend a lot of time walking around and having our meals there. Our kids favorite place is Moose McGillicuddy's.(ours too for happy hour!!) In Whaler's Village, we love Leilani's. Of course, we always hit up Pizza Hut after our long day spent driving to and from Hana!
We would and have recommended the Papakea to friends and family and will continue to do so. We hope to stay in this unit again, hopefully soon!!
