This property was as listed, had what we needed including beach chairs, umbrella, and coolers. It was in a great location close to the beach and a 10 minute walk to town. The bedroom AC units were wonderful. It was fairly hot in the main part of the house in the afternoon, but we were out and about most days anyways!
It definitely has a “family vacation home” vibe, as listed- it was well loved and had the wear and tear that comes along with years of use. And ants (only in the kitchen)- they were there when we showed up, and they hung with us until we left. For us these weren’t not a negative thing (especially considering the price point for three bedrooms, and ability to stay in hanalei bay so close to the beach) but if you are wanting more of an “upscale” experience, you may want to head up the road to Princeville….. which would be fine by us since we hope to return again someday (less competition😉).

My friend and I enjoyed Aunt Lydia's very much. It was like staying at a family home. Not luxury in any way, but cozy, comfortable and clean. Location is great, right by the beach and about a 10-15 minute walk into town. It is not super private though for those seeking real privacy. For the price, I do think they could update the beds a bit more and the electrical while keeping the old charm of the home. We had a great time though and I would recommend.

The location of the home was wonderful, very easy access to both beach and shops. Car port area was a fun place to hang out when it rained as it was nice & cool. Drawback, the house overall was extremely hot, even with all of the fans provided, keeping curtains closed during the day etc. Had to sit in bedrooms with ac on to get relief.

We absolutely loved staying at Auntie Lydia's Ohana. The home itself is simple and laid out really well - it felt so comfortable and easy to be in for our family of 4. The location itself is a five (or less?) minute walk from a stunning beach - one of us loved running on beach in morning, then taking an outdoor shower when he returned! We also rented bikes so we could easily cruise to town. It was all exceptional, we had an amazing time and hope to return again some day. Thank you!

We love this location in Hanalei and the house was perfect. It's quaint and reminiscent of a time gone by, but in a good way. The a/c in the bedrooms is a game changer and the outdoor shower is the best. Rent bikes and ride around town or just walk to the beach. We loved this stay.

This home had everything we needed. It felt like we were staying in a real family home. The very short walk to the beach is a huge, huge plus. The setting and scenery are lovely. We really appreciated that the house came with beach chairs, a small beach umbrella, a few beach towels, a small, soft cooler bag, and a very large cooler. The outdoor showers are truly wonderful. The back yard is nice, and the car port with table and chairs is a great staging area, and would be a good place to sit to wait out any rain. We could feel the family history in this house. It was a good vibe. The house is on the darker side inside, but this writer at least found it cozy, and we weren’t inside during the days. And no doubt it’s a bit cooler for not being all windows. The beds were comfortable. I would not hesitate to stay here again. (And as of this writing, there is a friendly black cat who comes around. I expect he’s food motivated. He’s good at what he does.)

Mostly an excellent experience! The location is good - an easy walk to both the beach and town. It is right on the highway but that quiets right down in the evening. Lots of space for the 5 of us with comfortable beds and linens. The kitchen is very well stocked. We cooked all sorts of meals and had everything we needed - even a sharp knife!! The downside was the heat.. Thankfully the bedrooms have A/C but the rest of the house was intolerably hot during the day - even with the multitude of fans so thoughtfully provided. Also, the only outdoor place to sit was the carport off the highway which honestly is not very pleasant. We found we spent our time in the bedrooms to escape the heat. We certainly could not sit at the table and play a game or watch the television. The back yard was lovely - it there was a sitting area there in the shade it would have made a huge difference as it was usually cooler outside than in. The carpet could use a cleaning but everything else was fine. No dishwasher. Really appreciated that sufficient soap, TP and paper towels were provided for our stay. Manager responded promptly to my one question. Check in a breeze.

Our family of 6 spent almost 2 weeks here and it worked perfectly. The location is great, just a short walk to the beach and town. Having the 2 outdoor showers and outdoor toilet were key. The bedrooms are air-conditioned which is a nice touch.

Perfect place for my Mom (91). Sis and myself . We were able to walk to the beach and to town and were just blocks from my daughters and their families. It was clean and beds were comfortable. I would suggest some minor upgrades ( bathroom needs some updating ). A place to sit in the yard would also be a nice addition. Overall, a good stay and would stay again.

Aunty Lydia’s was the perfect combination of location and affordability. We had room for my husband and two kids and mother in law from out of state.
The property is a 2 minute walk to Hanalei beach and a bit further for downtown Hanalei. The views of the mountains and waterfalls from the living room were sublime. We couldn’t ask for anything more.
The outdoor showers were very handy for post beach clean up and although it took us a couple days to find, the second toilet adjacent to the carport came in handy more than once!
We will definitely be coming back!!!

We loved our stay at Aunt Lydia’s Ohana! It was great to be able to walk to the beach and be so close to Hanalei town and the shopping center. Even driving to Tunnels or Anini were short drives from the house. With two teens the outdoor showers were a great amenity. The view from the carport was wonderful. This was a great home to unwind in, and enjoy meals we picked up in town. Owners were responsive and helpful.

March 2024
Pros:
3 blocks from the Ocean/ beach
0.5 miles from downtown Hanalei
Great view of Mountains from Living Room
Great selection of cookware and dishes
2 Outdoor showers and one outdoor toilet
Laundry- Washer and dryer
Homey comfortable feel to the place
Beach chairs/cooler/ and umbrella provide by the property.
Cons:
Full bed in NOT a queen and is very uncomfortable. It is a valley bed, the person who is the heaviest ends up in the bottom and other other person sleeps on a slant.
Black mold at the head of the king-sized bed.
The front door sticks and is an accident waiting to happen. Every one got stuck outside/inside a few times and could not open the door. When it would suddenly open people would barely catch themselves from falling down the stairs.
Do not recommend staying when it it above 80 degrees. The heat inside becomes oppressive. The main living areas have plenty of fans but it isn't enough to counter the heat. The AC in the bedrooms barely keeps up with the heat.

We loved our Aunty Lydia’s Ohana stay! Very simple and down to earth - not for those Hanalei visitors looking for “bougy” or fancy - but absolutely perfect for us. We loved cooking at home, walking to the beach morning and evening, wandering into town, hanging out with the cats who visited daily, and feeling at home in this great homestay. Plenty of space, all the kitchen gear you could need, washer/dryer, and awesome outdoor showers. Loved the chairs and towels - again the basics are totally provided! Mahalo for a beautiful Hanalei visit. We’ll be back!

GREAT location. Hanalei Bay is awesome. Great body boarding for us in December. The little town of Hanalei is perfect. Not too touristy. Teenage kids liked having their own rooms. Loved everything about this house and location.

November 2023
The house was perfect for us. Loved the location so near beach access. Loved the AC in the bedroom. Had two outside showers and a half bath located near laundry room. The only negative I would say is that it is dark inside with dark wood walls. The house was built in the 1950’s and has that old charm. We would there stay again.

An overwhelming feeling of hospitality from the hosts and through all communication and directions. We felt welcomed, wanted, and made to feel at home during our stay in Aunty Lydia’s Ohana.
AC units in the bedrooms were really nice. Outdoor showers were convenient and especially enjoyable on the days when it was more humid inside the house. The outdoor toilet was super handy, though a bit of a tight space.)
We found just about everything we needed for cooking in the kitchen, and bought some charcoal to enjoy the bbq out back.
Beach chairs were super handy. Towels and rags, etc. were in abundance (which was nice). Washer and dryer were also really nice to have (there was a small jar of laundry detergent available).
We felt that this home was a very fitting setting for our stay, and we appreciated all the little touches that made it feel like a home.
The home was well described by the other reviewers and are thankful for the opportunity to come to this beautiful island and have a “home” away from home here.
Oh! One review complained about the distance to the beach. This house is not on the beach. It is on the highway. If highway noise bothers you, this may not be a good choice. But as for the walk to the beach, it felt very short to us, and we loved the convenience of being able to walk to the beach (short 2.5 blocks), walk to town(maybe a mile?), or even be able to walk to Hanalei Pier (1.2 miles) in the mornings!

Inexpensive for Hanalei, this house is in An amazing location and staying in Hanalei was one of the great highlights of RR Vacation. That said, it is an old house With limited insulation at all of the bedrooms have Eric conditioner is the living room does not and it can become quite uninhabitable during the late afternoon. On the plus side the backyard is absolutely gorgeous and we just hung out there when it was too hot to be in the house. If you were looking for high end accommodations this is not for you.Butif you want to feel like the local’s lived in 1960 I say this is the place for you.It is literally around the corner from Hanalei Beach.

Charming 1950’s bungalow with a comfortable layout and helpful amenities like beach chairs and boogie boards. Truly felt like we were guests in their family home. Not fancy but felt authentically Hawaiian, complete with chairs and outdoor couch in the carport/breezeway! We enjoyed the island breeze, mountain views, and easy walk to the beach. Wifi was a little spotty, but hey, it’s vacation. Also enjoyed the outdoor shower and “secret” outdoor toilet. Genius.

Ohana means family in Hawaiian. But it also means a deep shared connection that is inclusive of all who are invited to share in deep family tradition. Lydia’s Ohana provides a feeling that 1.8 million dollars cannot buy. Priceless joy, love, abundance, and aloha are alive and well in this home. The moment you walk in the door you are greeted with a huge welcome that stays with you forever. May you be blessed by such a special experience as this Ohana provides.

September 2022
The house was thoughtfully furnished, well-equipped, and neatly organized. There were also beach chairs and other beach supplies in the carport for our use. We walked to Hanalei Beach twice a day most days, except when we explored other nearby beaches. The outdoor shower was perfect for washing off sand. We spent plenty of time in the house playing board games at the table and cooking family meals. We enjoyed our stay thoroughly.

We enjoyed our vacation at Aunty Lydia’s Obama. It had everything we needed and more. It was very close to the beach. It was warm during the day but very pleasant in the evening. The A/C in the bedrooms was wonderful. We had a great time. My daughter renewed her vows so we had a lot of family on the island and they all wanting to hangout at our place.

We loved our stay at Aunty Lydias and can't get over how at home we felt. The style in funky Hawaiian vintage and it suited us perfectly! The bedrooms are air conditioned and there was a large selection of cooking equipment and a BBQ so we could rest and cook comfortably all week. The walls have photos of the family and it made us feel love and aloha from them. We would love to come back and hope this place brings many others joy.

Positive:
spacious, very comfortable beds, very well equipped kitchen,
plenty of linens/towels, walk to a good beach, short drive to other better beaches, good value. Fabulous view of the mountain and its waterfalls, ever-changing and beautiful to watch. Great original mid-century decor.
Cons:
No comfortable outdoor space to hang out, except carport.
Some road noise from the highway.
Right next to an inn whose outdoor hangout was directly behind
the home.
There was a cottage in the back which was not rented.
I did not see its existence mentioned in the original description. If it had been rented, it would have impacted our enjoyment.

We have a young family and this spot suited us great. The location is unbeatable as a short walk to the funnest part of Hanalei bay beach and surf breaks. The house is old, but has everything you need including a well stocked kitchen for cooking. Outdoor shower is awesome. It's an ideal home base for the area.

Aunty Lydia’s Ohana is a gem on the North Shore! So close to a gorgeous beach… walked with our coffee every sunrise! House was very clean, super comfy beds, lots of extra pillows and blankets, a/c in the bedrooms but we didn’t need it much! Kitchen has everything you need, we used the BBQ and cooked almost everyday. Waking distance to lots of fun shops, restaurants, food trucks! Amazing view out of the living room windows, you can rent bikes cheap for an easy way to get around! Easy to find and easy check in, attentive management. Our stay was wonderful we fell in love and can’t wait to come back! You feel like one of the locals staying in this neighborhood by the beach. The outdoor shower was the best!!! Lots of rough surf but super fun for swimming and boogie boarding and there is a life guard so we felt safe. Just watch what the locals are doing in the water! You can walk or drive to the pier and that has more gentle waves and another amazing view! We give this 10 stars!

This was a great find for our family of four. The location in Hanalei was perfect; it’s a short easy walk to paradise. The house was as described — clean, well appropriated and has a nice yard for the kids to run around. The owners were very responsive; one of the AC’s broke during our stay and they had a new one installed the next day. Will definitely return!

December 2021
Overall, our family (husband + 2yo + grandparents) had a pleasant stay in this home.
The biggest pro of the home is the location - 5 min walk to a beach in Hanalei Bay!! Beautiful beach and wasn’t very crowded. Close to many attractions - local shops, farmers market, food trucks, restaurants, and grocery stores on the north shore. The location was very convenient for us and allowed us to do all that we wanted to see without having to drive far. Other good things to note, the home was stocked with essentials in the kitchen and bathroom - totally appreciated the abundance of towels ;). Beds were comfortable and rooms were spacious. The carport was convenient for the rainy days. There were beach chairs and toys available for use that came in handy. Outdoor shower was a big plus to help us stay clean after our beach trips. The grounds were also nice enough for my kid to explore and hang out. Lastly, the view of the mountains from the living room window was a very nice bonus!!
A few things to mention, it does get pretty hot during the day (11a - 3pm) in the central living room due to no window unit but we knew this from reading the reviews. We didn’t plan to be in the house during the day so didn’t think it’d be an issue but we ended up having to stay in on some days. There were plenty of fans which helped circulate some airflow and if it rained it wasn’t bad either. The house is also pretty dated but it gives the home character and brings a family environment.
Check-in was seamless and I appreciated the detail provided regarding the directions to the home. Check-out requirements were minimal which was so easy on us. Our family was very satisfied with our stay!

October 2021
This isn't your typical absentee owner generic condo. The place was great. My mom never wanted to leave the chair looking out the picture window at the back valley rain and waterfalls. We skipped the bathroom shower and only used the outdoor one. Louvered windows for air all had to be open as well as running the fans to keep the main living area from being too hot. AC was in the bedrooms so you could nap in the day if you needed it. Down sides: Because all the windows were always open the road noise from Kuhio Highway was more than I would like. While not far and a pleasant walk, 6 houses from the beach sounds a lot closer than the 2.5 blocks that it actually is. You don't just run back and forth from the house to the beach. Again, we loved our stay there.

October 2021
We had a great little stay at Auntie Lydia’s. Nice view of the mountains from the living room and fun old Hawaiian feel to the place. Kitchen was well outfitted for cooking dinner one night. If coming jetlagged, beware of roosters outside that think sunrise is 3am 😳.

August 2021
The house is a bit rustic, but it was exactly what we wanted. The old school charm and family history were great. It was a short walk to the beach or to town. The living did get a bit hot in the afternoon, but it wasn’t too bad and we were usually at the beach anyway.

The property was homey and convenient. Just around the corner from a beautiful beach and a decent walking distance to restaurants and bars in Hanalei. The provided beach chairs and boogie boards were a great bonus. Hot water, comfortable beds, and a very convenient additional outdoor toilet and shower. Thanks for a lovely stay!

I've always wanted to stay close to Hanalei Bay, and this house provided us the opportunity at a great price for 6 people! Honestly, it reminded me of my great-grandparent's home in South Texas.
We were within walking distance of Hanalei bay, about 1.5 blocks away, so we could walk to the beach at any time without difficulty. There were beach umbrellas, chairs, a boogie board and plenty of towels !
1 Bathroom was a little bit challenging, but having an outdoor enclosed shower for washing off after a trip to the beach made a huge difference.
While there was no AC in the kitchen and living room, each of the 3 rooms had a window unit which worked well in cooling during the day if needed. There were plenty of fans and windows that open to help circulate air in the morning and evening.
Kitchen had what we needed for cooking and making meals. Washing machine and dryer out back in a closet (also like my great-grandparent's house)
It's not a fancy hotel, but that isn't what you are paying for. And, a fancy hotel doesn't get this close to Hanalei Bay. Also, with the current state of the road closures (we were there June 21-28) that only allow traffic through between Princeville and Hanalei 3 times a day, it was awesome to not have our schedule tied to the road's opening/closing.
Wouldn't mind coming back to this little house again!

It's terrific. Very homey with personal touches that we appreciated but not overdone. Everything others have said: close to beach, big kitchen, lots of room.
May 2018
My family had a great time staying at Aunty Lydia's. The location is very close to everything we wanted to do - Hanalei beaches, downtown Hanalei, Haena beaches, etc. Easy walking to Pine Trees. We were very comfortable in the house, felt like home. We cooked food multiple nights, used the outdoor shower every day, and used the covered carport for drying off our swimsuits. Lots of fans in the house to keep cool at night, and one room has AC. Roosters like all over Kauai, but not as bad as our stay in Poipu - and it helps you get up to do all the activities! Suzanne and Cynthia were very pleasant and helpful. We definitely recommend staying, and would love to stay again in the future! Thanks Suzanne and Cynthia!

November 2016
We loved our time staying in Aunty Lydia's Ohana, a lovely very-well appointed and well-located former family home. It's a short walk to the beach and to the shops and restaurants in the town. Lots to do in the area: the beach, surf lessons, hiking on the Na Pali Coat, visit Limahuli Garden, mooch around the town. Hanalie is very beautiful and was the highlight of our ten days in Hawaii - our only regret was leaving, we could easilly have stayed another 3 or 4 days.

October 2016
My husband and I stayed at this wonderful home for two weeks. It was spacious and very close to the beach and town- easy access to everything. It was wonderful to have an outdoor shower to wash off after the beach and to have a large kitchen to cook in. We enjoyed the living room with the views of the mountains in the distance and the tropical front yard. Old hawaiian decor and a bit mid century in the living room, Also, the house is set back enough from the highway, you don't really hear too much and it is very clean. The management was very helpful when needed. The only reason I am giving this place four stars is because it was dark inside and hot- very hot & hard to cool down inside the house. I may be more partial to lighter spaces, so if you are okay with dark, then it would probably be great for you. Also, I'm not sure if we were having a bit of a heat wave, it was in the 90's, but the house held the heat. Overall, we had a nice stay.

September 2016
My family and I stayed at Aunty Lydia's at the end of August. You can't really go wrong when you are going to Hanalei for a vacation. This house is really nice for a large group or family. There were 6 of us and we felt like there was more than enough room for everyone to be comfortable. We really enjoyed the outdoor shower and the extra toilet outside. We were nervous about having one bathroom for 6 people, however, we were pleasantly surprised with the extra bathroom facilities. I haven't been somewhere, where I can wash my hair and look at mountains and waterfalls...So pretty. We didn't realize that we came during "El Nino" season so the humidity was a bit of a shock to our system. The house has an AC unit for one bedroom but it is only meant for use in that specific bedroom. If you have a hard time sleeping in humidity and heat, and require AC, I suggest researching the cooler times to go if you plan on staying here. It is a great house and it is still a great time but sleep is a challenge if your body is not used to the elements. his house had everything that we needed for a fun family experience.

June 2016
We loved Auntie Lydia's. My family stayed for a week in June. 3 adults/2 kids. It was stocked with everything we needed. Clean and "old school Hawaiian" charm. Very close to town and Pine Trees beach. You are right off the main highway and in the day the traffic can be noisy, but there are hedges to keep you feeling private. Front room looks out toward the mountain and all of the water falls. The most amazing part of the house is the outside shower. It was magical standing under the warm water, in the rain, and seeing the beautiful mountain and waterfalls. The carport was great for barbecuing and visiting. It was raining quite a bit while we were there and we had friends over and ate all our dinners out there. They had a cooler, a couple of boogie boards, and beach chairs to use. Each room has fans and we were very comfortable. One of the rooms has air conditioning if you need that. Washer and dryer on site. And even though it says one bathroom, they have a little room with a toilet outside, which is convenient when traveling with kids and grandma!! We loved seeing the pics that are around the home of Auntie Lydia and her family. Hanalei is such a sweet little town and being able to stay in a home, and not a condo, was such a wonderful way to visit. Thank you for sharing your sweet Hanalei Ohana. We will defiantly be staying with you again. Aloha

After searching online for an affordable rental in Hanalei, I was delighted when I found Aunty Lydia's. It's not upscale or posh, but it is a spotless, homey, roomy, and well-equipped place for a terrific stay in a convenient location. As someone who vacationed with my family in modest beach cottages on Cape Cod as a kid, the paneled walls and 50s-era ambiance evoked nostalgia. Who cares if some of the fixtures are a tiny bit worn in this misty, green, lush tropical paradise? My husband and I slept well in the back bedroom in the comfy king-size bed and didn't bother with A/C, and since we travel with a white-noise app for the iPad, road noise/rooster serenade didn’t trouble us. (Note: LOTS of plugs to charge devices.) I loved lounging in the cute bamboo-and-palm-themed living room and gazing out the double windows at the lavish vegetation and amazing mountain views (we saw two waterfalls!). An easy stroll to the beach and just a bit further to town on Weke Road (or Kuhio Hway if you don't mind no sidewalk). Our excursions included Limahuli Garden, Ke'e Beach, Mediterranean Gourmet, and Anini Beach. Just a relaxing and easy-going stay, with great service from the friendly and trusting management company. Would definitely re-book this welcoming family home if we ever return to Hanalei.

April 2016
We have been to Kauai several times, but had never stayed on the North shore. I found this very well priced home, read the past reviews and booked it for the first few days of our spring break. Aunty Lydia's was the perfect place to stay! The location is within a few minutes walk to a beautiful beach on Hanalei Bay. Beach chairs, boogie boards, cooler, beach mats were all provided. The house is well within walking distance to the town, but since it is located right off of Kuhio Highway, there are not any sidewalks and walking at night can be tricky. The house is one block off of Weke Road, the other main road through the area, so that is an option. The north beaches, which end at Ke'e Beach and the Kapalau Trail are within a 10 minute drive. Views from the yard are spectacular! We were not bothered at all by road noise. There was an unusual weather pattern coming through during our stay, and we had heavy rain, thunder and lightning, which caused the road into/out of Hanalei to flood and close. If it does happen, there are people who cannot get into town and therefore, some businesses may not keep regular hours because staff cannot get to work. This is something to be aware of in case you will be visiting other parts of Kauai during a trip, but it did not cause us any problems. Roosters, chickens, chicks and other wildlife, lizards, etc. are abundant all over the island, not just here. So if you are not wanting to be bothered by the crowing at all times of the day or sometimes night, or the tropical animals, Kauai may not be for you. We loved the house - funky and fully equipped, with the exception of a dishwasher or A/C, which we were aware of. Plenty of fans provided to keep things breezy. The outdoor shower with the mountain views was something we all loved and it was convenient to have for after the beach and to use to keep the inside bathroom from getting too muggy. We are already trying to plan for a return trip and will definitely stay at Aunty Lydia's again!

Very clean spacious home. Extremely well stocked kitchen, along with bath and beach towels which were plentiful. Beach chairs, toys, cooler. Fans in every room plus air conditioning in one room. Pretty much all you need for a good visit. Beach is about a five minute walk. I don`t really have any complaints at all. It is on the highway but the highway also ends not long after so the traffic dies after supper. This did not seem to b an issue. A short walk to town, about 10 minutes. My kids and I walked to supper most nights. Excellent grocery store about a five minute drive down the road. Overall wonderful experience.
