And not only secluded, but only a four and a half minute walk to a gorgeous and private beach! (I know VRBO wrote “six minute walk” in the title, but I measured it once!). Gilligan's Beach Cottage is not like one of the houses packed into town--it is about 15 minutes east of Princeville in rural Kauai in an unspoiled, natural valley called Moloa'a. If you check it out on a map, you will find Moloa'a Bay in the upper right hand corner. Since there is very limited public parking near the beach, this beach is relatively undiscovered by tourists. Hollywood, however, did discover this idylic location in the 1960's and filmed the entire pilot episode of 'Gilligan's Island' here--thus, the name we chose.

Gilligan's Cottage is situated on a large rural lot which is filled with fruit and palm trees, to the delight of our guests. This valley is sparsely populated, and privacy and tranquility is what you will find here. Gilligan's has one bedroom, one full bath with a private outdoor Hawaiian Shower (which is very popular with our guests!). The cottage is fully modern in every way, yet still retains the charm of Old Hawaii in its plantation setting. And not only that, for the warmer, more humid summer days, Gilligan’s has a high-quality Lennox split-system air conditioning unit!

Moloa'a Beach--oh, the beach! Just a four and a half minute walk down a lovely paved country road. Very beautiful, very clean and very LONELY! Many times, you will be the ONLY one to be walking this beach watching turtles, picking up shells, and observing an occasional Monk seal. This is the type of setting in which you totally forget that there is a civilization!

But the nicest part--civilization is just a few minutes drive away from Gilligan's! You will notice that Moloa'a is centrally-located on Kauai, and after a day at restaurants, shopping, hiking, and touring paradise, you still have Gilligan's to come home to--only a dream away...

Being close to the beach means that we are located in a tsunami zone. In the unlikely case of a tsunami, simply drive up Moloaa Road to Koolau Road, where you will be out of the tsunami zone.

We throughly enjoyed our stay at Gilligans. The cottage was so cozy, secluded and private and surrounded by lush tropical tress and plants and flowers close to the beach. The cottage was very clean, had all the amenities we needed including snorkeling gear, towels and boogie boards. Tony was an amazing and accommodating host and we loved feeding the little kitties every evening. !!

We enjoyed being a short walk from this lovely, uncrowded beach. The rental was charming, with everything we needed. Very quiet and private. And i loved having the “resident” outdoor cats to feed and pet.😻

Everything about this property is incredible! The actual cottage itself, the surroundings, the location. Nestled in the jungle just a short distance walk to the ocean. Bright green geckos outside. The sounds of tropical birds. I didn’t shower indoors for a week because of the outdoor shower! The breeze blowing gently through the trees. The fruit trees. The coziness. Everything about it was PERFECT! My husband and I came to Kauai to get married and spend our honeymoon on the Island. Tony wrote us a sweet note wishing us a great time and happy Honeymoon! :) Property was easy to find, quiet neighborhood. We felt like we were HOME staying here! I couldn’t recommend this place enough! Anahola is such an awesome little town. The market isn’t too far away. Close to Kapaa, Hanalei. Sigh. I miss it so much! Would give anything to go back

This beautiful, secluded spot is surrounded by flora and Fana. The avocado tree outback is just ready for you to pick a big ripe avocado along with all the other fruit trees. Tony was a wonderful and very attentive host.

This place and it's location are a Hawaii from decades ago. My wife and I only spent three days/nights there, and wished we'd stayed a week or more. The house itself is a little funky but it has everything you need to be comfortable. Less can certainly be more. It is well equipped. The kitchen has a lot of things for cooking, great filtered water, spices sauces, so you don't have to go out and buy a lot of stuff a a market. The BBQ is great. There are beach towels, snorkeling equipment, and a couple of boogie boards. The property is really nice, with fruit trees, tropical flowers, a huge avocado tree, coconut palms, and lots of jungle foliage. The best part is the location. It's out of the way, and it's a fantastic, secluded bay. If you want a place to really relax, talk to the owner, Tony, and reserve a slot of time in paradise! He's a wonderful guy to talk to, and he wants to give his guests the opportunity to share something very special!

Stunning property. Couldn’t wait to get home each night and sit out in the lanai. Outdoor shower was awesome. Enjoyed the stray cats that visited us each day and the geckos…and even roosters. Beach within walking distance was incredible and never packed. Cabin exceeded our already high expectations. Would absolutely recommend 10 times over.

First time to Kauai, found Gillian's on a stroke of good luck. Words here are not enough but I'll try. Attention to detail, clean beyond belief, perfectly put together with obvious well thought out guidance and instruction throughout the cottage from Tony. Things you never think about until you are there,,, for example, which switch turns on the ceiling fan, which direction do you turn the handle for the hot water in the shower, which little button quick starts the coffee maker. All of these and so much more are clearly labeled. Not often mentioned on reviews of other cottages, but I think an important one here that shows the thought Tony has put into his rental. The cottage is gorgeous, quiet, comfortable, and just makes you want to relax and be................ Everything works , ie, is functional in this house by the way. The pics do not do it justice. You will find everything, and I mean everything you need for a 2 night, or 2 month stay. Incredible. I hate giving such high praise because the bookings are so full so far out but Tony deserves the praise. We had the pleasure of meeting he and his wife, top shelf people. We will be back !

My husband and I had an amazing stay in this cottage. Tony gave detailed directions on getting to the cottage as well as how to get the keys. I can’t describe how peaceful I felt here. The grounds, the birds, the flowers, and the fruit trees were amazing. The cottage was secluded and felt more like home which was so different from the resort areas. It was a short walk to the beach and it was not crowded at all. We went every day and just sat and enjoyed the waves. I absolutely loved it and highly recommend this cottage. Sitting on the deck, drinking a glass of wine, watching the chickens and cats was extremely pleasurable and relaxing. This is on my favorites list for future visits. Thank you Tony. I am going to miss your part of Kauai.

Giligan's Cottage was the perfect secluded hideaway we were looking for -- off the beaten track, very close to an uncrowded beach, close enough to Kilauea and Hanalei, as well as the East Shore towns, to take care of shopping and occasional dining out -- and the cottage had all we needed to be self-sufficient most of the time anyway. Fresh avocados and tangerines right off the trees in the yard were a real plus.

We are enchanted to know about this gem of a place - it surpassed expectations. Any time we thought of something we should have brought, we found it in the cottage- thankfully that included a sun umbrella. It truly has a thoughtful home feeling and the yard itself is paradise! We ate fruit from the yard and stargazed at night. The best açaí bowls and healthy food at Kalalea Juice Hale right close on the corner of Koolau Road. Much time spent at Moloa’a beach and hiking Larsen’s. A short drive to many great locations. The best time imaginable. We will return without a doubt!

We really loved our week at Gilligan's--it is a wonderful private retreat away from the holiday crowds at other island sites. Moloa'a Beach is just as advertised, beautiful and uncrowded, and a four and a half minute walk from the cottage. Tony's local helpers do a wonderful job. The cottage was spotlessly clean and the grounds are beautiful and well-maintained. We really liked the layout of the cottage, perfect for a couple and with ample space. The front and back decks are terrific, we really enjoyed them. We love an outdoor shower and weren't disappointed by the large outdoor shower area at Gilligan's. The cottage was generously equipped with all the kitchen utensils and appliances we needed, plenty of towels for the shower and the beach, paper goods, soaps, shampoos, and laundry supplies. There are also dozens of movies and books, including a variety of Kauai guide books. The cottage has a variety of items for enjoying the beach: chairs, mats, coolers, snorkel gear, and a wagon for hauling it all. Tony went above and beyond by providing detailed information weeks ahead of our arrival. He had hints about managing arrival at Lihue Airport, good directions to the cottage, and detailed information about the cottage itself. He also provided detailed information about activities in the area. We really appreciated the effort Tony put into his package of information. We loved the cottage and the area and had a great getaway.

Gilligan's is a beautiful, well-maintained cottage on a gorgeous property. The owner is extremely helpful and informative, and our interactions with him were friendly and open. The cottage has most everything you'd need to have a relaxing, stress-free stay, and the distance to the quiet beach is minimal and easily walked. The area is quiet and lush, with next to no traffic, and lovely flowers and trees everywhere you look. We will definitely recommend this place to others, and return to it the next time we come to the island.

We have stayed in Moloaa Bay before and love it there - it is off the beaten track with a great beach but is positioned well to explore other parts of the island. This cottage is positioned close to the beach and has everything 2 people need to have a great vacation. Communication with Tony was and his onsite team was stellar. Can't say enough about how we appreciated the hospitality.

Wonderful experience, felt like we were in a private tropical setting. The host was very accessible, sent excellent helpful info before our stay, and had thought of everything to make our stay perfect. The cottage even came with kitties and we thoroughly enjoyed them, as it made us missing ours just a little bit easier. We will stay here again when we return, even if we have to work our schedule around availability.

Gilligan’s Cottage exceeded any expectations we had imagined based on the listing information. We loved this quiet, jungle meets farm while having the most beautiful beach only a 5 minute walk away. It was SO refreshing and rejuvenating to not be surrounded by the usual fast paced tourist/hotel scene. We feel so fortunate and grateful to have found this very special place. Tony was such a great host and we really appreciated all of the great suggestions on dining, hiking and other great places to check out on the island. We also had the honor of meeting and chatting with the groundskeeper, Kelli, who is just so gentle hearted and kind. Gilligan’s will forever hold a very special place in our hearts and we will be returning. Thank you, so very much, for this unforgettable experience. Our most sincere Aloha and Mahalo!

My husband and I have been to Kauai several times over the years, and this was by far the best little cottage we've ever stayed in on the island. The property was absolutely gorgeous and everything we were promised. It was clean, well kept and pretty well-equipped. It could use a new mattress for the bed (a bit hard and a tad small), but that did not detract from how much we loved it there. We ate fresh fruit picked from the plentiful bounty available in the beautiful yard every day. There was little-to-no road noise and the neighborhood was quiet and peaceful. Best of all, Moloa'a Beach really is just a 5-minute walk down the road. And what a beach! Great for low-key boogie boarding and body surfing, great snorkeling and great swimming, all on this fantastic beach where we never encountered more than 20 people. I highly recommend Gilligan's and hope to stay there again myself some day very soon.

Everything about the space was perfect for our trip. Great location on the island to drive north and south. A very short walk to a really nice secluded beach. The deck was amazing to sit and have coffee in the morning and hear the birds. Very clean and accurately depicted. Stocked with everything you need for a beach day. Stocked with essential cook wear and spices. We found the bed very comfortable. There is an outdoor shower that we used almost everyday! The host Tony was very informative of everything to expect prior to our trip. And he is quick to respond if you need anything. Will definitely book this place again next time!

The whole experience was wonderful! The location, very private, the accommodations, great, the people, activities, all so very enjoyable. The cottage is perfect for 2 people.and the reviews about the chickens, we loved the chickens! They didn’t disturb our sleep at all. Plan your trip for as long as you can. It’ll still be too short.

Secluded and peaceful (except for the chickens) with Shama birds singing in the morning and evening. This is our second visit to Gilligan's Cottage and we highly recommend it to anybody wonting to escape from the "resort" atmosphere and truly have a relaxing stay.

The place is magical and Tony is a wonderful host. My only complaint is not being warned in time that the crowing of many roosters right outside the house will wake you up starting at 3am so bring earplugs and a sound machine. Everything else is just as described. 4 minute walk to an almost deserted gorgeous beach.

We stayed at Gilligan’s Island for our 27 anniversary. It was a short walk to a beautiful beach, we loved sitting the porch in the evening and the owners were beyond kind and accommodating. Beautiful experience

May 2013
We spent 10 wonderful days at Gilligan’s cottage immediately following the disgruntled renter who wrote a previous review and apparently left after one night (March, 2013). Since we and the previous renter stayed at the same cottage and shared the same amenities within one week of each other, we can only assume that her needs and expectations were quite a bit different than ours. It sounds like she would have been more comfortable staying at a hotel or condo. However, WE really enjoyed the privacy, the wildlife, the bright stars at night, the gorgeous lush landscaping and a very charming cottage. She mentioned no shades on the windows. It never entered our minds to have them as the foliage gave us complete privacy, and we would never have used them had they been there. The cottage is a darling, happy abode. We were impressed with the overall maintenance of the property and the attention to details, including comfortable sleeping quarters, a well-stocked kitchen, and an abundant supply of books and movies. Actually, we didn’t turn the television on even once while we stayed at Gilligan’s. It would have been a distraction from the gorgeous environment and experiences we had while on Kauai. We were also impressed with an assortment of snorkeling gear, beach mats and towels, and beach chairs for us to use. We couldn’t have been happier walking to what was almost our own private bay, not seeing more than a half dozen local people there. If you’re looking for a Motel 6 or Marriott experience, then Gilligan’s cottage may not be for you. However, if you want to experience the beauty of the jungle in a delightful rural neighborhood with beautiful landscaping, a 4-minute walk to the ocean, and a charming cottage surrounded by coconut trees and a multitude of indigenous fruit trees, we would encourage anyone to rent Gilligan’s cottage. It provided a respite from our daily routines and a very enjoyable vacation experience for us. We couldn’t have asked for more, and we would definitely go back; we’ve already encouraged others to stay there. It was a piece of heaven.

I just read the critical review by Seattlite, and I am wondering if she even stayed in the same cottage that we stayed in, because we loved the place and did not find Gilligan's Beach Cottage to be anything as bad as she is trying to make it out to be. To begin with the we loved the openness of the cottage - so many windows to look out at the beautiful tropical landscape. The place seemed larger than it was because of the windows not being covered. The decor was very Hawaiian and felt homey with personal touches. It was supplied with all we needed - in the kitchen, down to Olive Oil and tea bags and for the beach it had the beach chairs and beach toys. We felt right at home. It was centrally located which made it easy to visit different sites. We did have trouble with the telephone and the toilet (nothing big) but the owner took care of it right away. We would highly recommend it and hope to go back.

May 2013
While looking for availability to again rent Gilligan's Cottage for next year, I saw a review from "Seattlite" on her stay at Gilligan's. I am amazed that Seattlite and I could have such different experiences in the same cottage. I stayed there last July and fell in love with the cottage and Moloa'a Valley. I loved the privacy and yes, even without blinds on the windows it is very secluded and private. It is surrounded by jungle but within minutes you can be at one of the most beautiful, uncrowded beaches on the whole island. The cottage is absolutely charming in every respect and has everything you could possibly need to make the stay perfect. The location is convenient to visit all of the interesting sights and activities the island has to offer. I can't remember if the pillowcases were "completely frayed", but it sure didn't ruin my trip! The place was so clean and charming, I will continue to plan my vacations to stay at the same place. The owners were so accomodating and treated me like they had known me their whole lives. There was nothing "scary" about the cottage and its location. It is truly a relaxing vacation environment! I feel bad for Seattlite that she was not able to appreciate what a wonderful location it is.

May 2013
I don't usually write reviews, but when I came across the review by Seattlite, I knew I had to set the record straight. She is dead wrong. I'm not really sure what her problem is, but Gilligan's Beach Cottage is a very charming place to stay. Our stay was for 10 days, in August, 2012. We had a great time. We loved the peace and solitude, the 11 types of fruit in the yard, the beach toys and gear, and the fully stocked kitchen with all the amenities not offered at many of the other places we had checked out. The outdoor shower, the short tranquil walk to the beach we took most mornings and countless other amenities. We had many quiet evenings on the deck and the wonderful breakfasts in the morning. We also observed much of the native wildlife walking across the property and got many beautiful pictures. We even took family pictures on the property which came out great. The attention to detail by the owner is wonderful and the available pictures on the website detailed everything to expect. What to expect at Gilligan’s beach house and places to go and see. He left nothing out. If you are a stay at home type, the movies and books provided are plentiful. Most resorts you have to pay to do laundry, not here. Washer and dryer provided with detergent provided for free, which came in very handy on our daily visits to the beach. Seattlite says that she can't recommend this cottage to any one. Maybe she means 'anyone with paranoid fears'. We plan on many more great vacations in Kauai and are looking forward to many more stays at Gilligan’s Beach Cottage in the future. Planning a family trip at any of the big time resorts would have cost us much more and offered so much less than this experience.

April 2013
Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this cottage. I had chosen it because Moloaa Bay is beautiful. I arrived late afternoon and as evening came on, I realized there were no blinds/shades on any of the windows, not even in the bedroom. There were very high plants across the front of the house, but I still felt very exposed in a lit up room and a very dark outdoors. I was reading the visitors' book and read that in January of 2013, one couple had gone out for a short while and came back to find that a thief had come in a small window and stolen the woman's purse and keys and her husband's PC and MP3. This unnerved me. Then there were 2 small plug in lights that flashed blue every few seconds and I did not know what they were for, but they were very irritating. After one night, I called the owner and explained my concerns to him. He was not helpful and said I had "irrational fears" because I wanted to have some blinds in at least the bedroom, did not like the two flashing blue lights (which he said I should leave plugged in due to insects that could come in otherwise.) Also I was upset by the break-in in his cottage, just 2 months prior. He said those January tenants must have left a very small sliding window open and that this road had seen several break- ins in the last few months. He kept telling me I was in "in the jungle" and that if I wanted blinds, I should have gone to a condo! His ad saying "secluded" does not say "jungle". Also, I did not find the cottage really well-kept up, though it was, in general, neat. One screen was broken and was patched together with scotch tape; in the kitchen one hinge was broken on a cabinet door; in the bathroom there was a broken handle on the cabinet door under the sink. The pillow cases on the bed had completely frayed edges. For the price I had paid, I did not expect these issues. Because this owner would not address my concerns, and kept repeating I just had "irrational fears" and would not negotiate with me or meet me half-way for the 12 days I had already paid for, I chose to leave this cottage and paid again for a rental elsewhere so I could enjoy my 2 weeks in Kauai. So buyer beware. This cottage was way below my expectations; I was extremely dissatisfied, so I would not recommend it to anyone.

My husband and I spent our honeymoon in Kauai and rented Gilligan's Cottage in August 2009. We were there for 10 days and couldn't have asked for a more perfect experience! Gilligan's is everything it boasts to be and more...the pictures don't do it justice. The owners have thought of every possible amenity to make it feel like a home away from home. It was spotless and well maintained. We loved spending time on the lanai. The bed was very comfortable. Don't pack a lot of clothes, as you won't need them! The washer and dryer are very handy to have. The owners are very helpful and accommodating. The North Shore offers lots of sightseeing, beach, shopping and restaurant choices. Moloa'a Beach is paradise found....especially beautiful for pictures in the early morning. We would recommend this cottage to anyone. You won't be disappointed and the price is incredibly good.
