Shaka Hale Reviews

June 2024
we booked this dreamy house for my 50th birthday celebration, we had friends renting another Shaka property down the street and more friends in Poipu. This was a great home to host everyone for a BBQ. There was plenty of seating and dining ware. We made use of the many available games. We enjoyed yoga on the walkable beach across the street. The house fit all of us so comfortably. We were even able to accommodate a surprise visit from my nephew. There was plenty of towels, both bath and beach. Tons of beach chairs and umbrellas that came in handy. We were a bit away from the action which was a blessing and a hassle from time to time but I still chose the best house for an amazing week! The only things I can recommend would be new seating cushions for the lanai. And perhaps just a tad more attention to the detailed cleaning. The house in general was immaculate, it was just the little things that i noticed such as dirty hand railings - but it was no big deal. Overall - a WONDERFUL PROPERTY! I would highly recommend.

I chose this home due to its ability to house the 9 of us. We consisted of 3 couples and 3 small children. The lay out was perfect for our family and we had plenty of space. The lanai was large and the perfect place to have meals together. This home is on the west side of the island (dryer side). The beach was amazing and had great boogie boarding for experienced swimmers. The excursions were about 15-45 min away from the house, but not a problem for us. This is a more local side of the island and not full of many tourists. The overall experience was 5 stars for us and we plan on returning in 2025.

This is a beautiful home on the quiet, warm side of the island. Very close Waimea Canyon and Kekeha beach. Easily accommodated, 3 generations of our family.

We loved our stay in Kekaha at Shaka Hale. It's a wonderful, quiet neighborhood near great beaches and the lovely town of Waimea. The house is beautiful, spacious, and well-appointed, with dreamy ocean views, and we thoroughly enjoyed exploring the West and South sides of the island and being away from the primary tourist areas. Be aware that there is road noise from the highway at all hours, so the primary suite can be a bit noisy at night. Regardless, we loved our time here and highly recommend it. We would absolutely stay here again.

From the moment we walked into Shaka Hale, we knew it was worth the price of admission. The house is stunning, incredibly spacious and definitely elegant. The furniture is beautiful and the decorations are simply perfect. With stunning breathtaking views we miss already. The master suite is outstanding, great space, amazing views and we had coffee on the lanai every morning, watched the sunset over Ni’ihau and just relaxed out there at the end of the day. A TV in the room would have made it 110% perfect, but there is one in the spacious area just outside of the master. The downstairs master leads to the screened in porch, which was fantastic and the other 2 bedrooms had plenty of space and storage. The incredible kitchen includes a countertop that goes on forever. Everything you could think needing of in a kitchen was there including a spacious pantry. The location is incredible, away from the hotels and tourists. The beach just up the road is incredible; not crowded, large beach and those amazing sunsets. Just 2 miles away is a well stocked Big Save, restaurants and our favorite, JoJo’s shaved ice. There are tons of games & puzzles and the wifi was excellent. Plenty of towels, chairs & beach gear. This house was perfect for our vacation, definitely made everything feel elegant on the next level. Chad was incredibly informative and an absolutely outstanding host. We would definitely highly recommend this property and hope to be back ourselves.

The house itself is beautiful and has wonderful outdoor space as well. It wasn't spotless, but was clean enough. The disappointment was location. We realized we were going to be in an out of the way place and this is what we wanted. We hiked in the canyon and enjoyed eating in Waimea. The photos make it seem like there is some sand in front; that is not the case. One review said in the winter there is sand, but there was not in December. There was a bit of a beach to the left and a larger beach to the right. Both were not clean and had people living in tents on or near them. There were lots of cigarette butts on the sand in both locations. I didn't' want to get in the water but was hoping to walk along the beach. The only option was along a very busy road. We knew there was a road but didn't anticipate it being this busy so far out of the way. Lots of traffic at all hours, which was quite loud in the house, especially the front side. The master upstairs had headlights shining in all night, even with the shades pulled. Again, the house itself is nice but it wasn't the quiet, relaxed vacation we were looking for with all the traffic and the dirty beach areas.

We were so excited to stay right next to the beach, except when we went the Kekaha beach was not allowing people to enter the water so you were stuck on land. A little ways up by Waimea there was a great beach especially for little kids called the salt Ponds and then we spent a lot of time in Poipu because we wanted to be in the water not just on the beach. The house was great though! It had everything we needed and was so peaceful at night! We would definitely go back at a different time of year!

We absolutely enjoyed our stay - we had seven people in our party (couple, single and party of four with two 7yr olds). We had plenty of room inside as well as two lanais set up to relax and an outside living area. You could watch the sunset each evening, walk across the street and sit on the rocks next to the ocean with your coffee and gaze up at the stars at night. The house was beautifully decorated and provided plenty of space for family gatherings.

This house was perfect for our group. Beautiful home, great setup for our family plus a family friend (master upstairs and another large bedroom with en suite on the first floor). Lots of areas to sit and recharge (multiple lanais). The beach view was amazing. Lots of amenities in the home to use (condiments, spices, beach toys, snorkels, other beach accessories). This side of the island is much less touristy but that is what we were looking for. Close to lots of Waimea Canyon hiking and several really great restaurants in the town of Waimea. The beach was beautiful but not a swimming beach for kids but our kids really enjoyed playing in the sand and watching the waves. Overall, great place and would choose to stay again.

This was a perfect getaway home for a week with our family and close friends. Home was well stocked with plenty of amenities. Beautiful sunsets every night! (We just walked across the street and enjoyed sunset every night from the small beach). Chad was very helpful in giving us island recommendations.

Views were outstanding on top lanai, but only accommodated 4 persons. We had 7 in our party, so we could not all sit together on the upper lanai. Screened in porch on lower lanai had a good view of the ocean even if it was situated on the side of the house. Disappointed in the traffic noise. At times you could not hear each oth

March 2023
We had a great stay in this spacious home with plenty of room for 6 of us. The outdoor spaces were great with ocean views, you could hear the waves from your bedroom. Some of the outdoor furniture was a bit tired due to the weather and proximity to the ocean but we sat out most days. Appliances were great, kitchen is large and had most of what we needed. Location is about 10- 15 min walk to a great beach, the nearest town is Wimea which is about 5 min by car. We sadly hit a patch of bad weather so spent a lot of time indoors. Luckily the house was very comfortable for 6 of us.

The property was perfect for us. We each had our own Bed and Bath. The property Manager was easy to reach when we had a water leak in the upstairs bath. (Lived right behind the home). We did have to travel some to other locations to visit but hey we got to see the sights along the way! Mahalo!

This is really a lovely home but we didn’t get much chance to enjoy it. We spent all of our time driving to Lahui and the east shore North Shore because that’s where all the activities are. The house is showing its age but it is a lovely home. I will probably not stay here again just because of the location and the fact that we didn’t get to enjoy it…it was still dark when we left and it was dark when we got back…

Such an amazing property and location. Chad was absolutely amazing to communicate with. I needed a lot of different information for us and for our family as far as places to go and things to do and Chad was our man!! He helped us every step of the way. You can hear and see the ocean from the upstairs master Lanai. The kitchen was fully equipped with dishes, pots, pans, toaster oven, small toaster, glass pitcher etc. The only thing I wish it had was a slow cooker so that I could set it and forget it while we play at the beach. I was grateful they supplied body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. In the pantry there are a few spices such as salt, pepper, cumin, chili pepper which was nice so that we could cook without having to rush to the store for spices. Grocery store within an 8 to 10 minute drive and this side of the island is quiet and not as busy or crowded. Can't say enough good things about this property, location and manager. We will definitely be back!!!

Incredible home with stunning views of the ocean. Plenty of room to gather as a group and also space to spread out when needed. The multiple lanais are heavenly and the home is tastefully decorated. Well appointed kitchen. This is a great place if you want to be away from the busyness of the cities and fully immerse yourself in the beauty of Kauai!

July 2022
Wonderful home that was surprisingly equipped. We appreciated that toilet paper, soap, shampoo, beach towels, chairs and beach toys were provided. The house is well maintained and clean in a nice neighborhood. There is a short walk to the beach. Traffic noise and a very uncomfortable bed are our only complaints. We did have s surprise visit from the owner which was not appreciated, otherwise it was a wonderful house.

February 2022
Booked a celebration vacation with family. Our daughter’s only request was to have an ocean view. We found this beautiful house with all the room we needed right on the ocean. Wow!! The very first day we were watching whales from the Lanai! The location was perfect for us. Away from the resorts and crowds. A short drive to the port for a cruise, the southern beaches for snorkeling and finding turtles but still had quiet nights for family games and falling asleep listening to the waves. Having A/C was a plus. The days were warm and cooling the rooms before bedtime made sleeping very comfortable. Gorgeous kitchen, bathrooms, furnishings….much better than staying in a hotel. Chad was extremely responsive and helpful every step of the way. Would highly recommend staying here!!

Absolutely loved the home. No problems with the house - however road noise was a tad loud. The master bedroom is gorgeous- master bed is worn and old and mattress could be replaced. No complaints though and would stay there again anytime. Loved it and was so so so sad to go. The best part about the house is that it comes with all necessities for lovely days at beaches. Sand chairs - snorkels masks and baby toys were such a wonderful surprise.

From start to finish we loved our time on Kauai! The house was amazing, and so spacious. So many areas to spread out. The ocean views were spectacular, and the sunsets were breathtaking. The house had one of the best stocked kitchens we have ever seen, and we loved that there were two fridges. The amount of beach accessories to use ( chairs, snorkels, and boogie boards) made our beach days fabulous. While Kekaha is about a 45 minute to an hour drive from Lihue, we loved the beaches and other activities we were able to do on the west side of the island. All eight adults would highly recommend this beach house rental. It was worth the drive and location. Mahalo

We looked at many houses on different islands, decided on this remote, rural part of beautiful Kauai. We were glad because the pandemic was still ongoing and we could be away from hotels and crowds. It was perfect for our family of 6 adults, a toddler and a baby. The house has everything you could want for cooking and BBQ and that’s what we did most nights, after a mega shopping trip to Costco in Lihue. We got yummy takeout from Island Tacos in Waimea, and loved Grandma’s Japanese in Hanapepe, fabulous sushi in a large outdoor garden. The house faces the ocean right across the road, with beautiful lanais downstairs and upstairs, but there is quite a lot of traffic. The best beach is Kekaha Beach Park, a very short drive (2-3 min) with wide sand and a lifeguard. The house has great sand toys, beach towels, chairs, and more. The closest hotel, shopping center with stores and restaurants, and golf courses are in the Poipu area, about 30 min. drive. We bought fresh fish to BBQ at Koloa Fish Market in nearby Koloa town. All in all, a wonderful 10-day family vacation!

August 2021
If you have a large group, this home is perfect. Our family of 7 spent 12 nights here in July 2021 to celebrate my 50th birthday. The house is wonderful! I do agree with other reviewers that there are a few furnishings that are in dire need of refurbishing or repair; specifically the loveseat in the living room; however even with the stains & tears in the fabric my 15 year old son thought it was the best spot in the house for him! If you are looking for a home with plenty of space, spectacular views of the ocean that is situated in a small town away from tourist crowds, this is the place for you! Chad, the property manager was extremely patient and responsive. The 2nd floor lanai (access from the master and the family room) was the perfect place to drink coffee during sunrises and drink wine during sunsets. I am very noise sensitive, but I was surprised by how quickly (2nd or 3rd night) I blocked out the road noise and tuned into the ocean. It was so soothing. The upstairs master bed was very comfortable, even for me and I have a back injury. The downstairs master could use a new mattress. There is a defined dip that my sister and her husband found to be pretty uncomfortable. All of the children slept comfortably in the additional bedrooms. Every kitchen item and appliance was available (coffee grinder, toaster oven, blenders, strainers toaster) with plenty of dishes for a large group. I was surprised how much we enjoyed the small TV on the first floor lanai when the couples got together for a movie night. Everything looks as it appears in the photos minus some furniture wear and tear which is bound to happen with a rental. All of kids (ages 15, 18 and 20) enjoyed lounging in the upstairs family room in the evenings and also appreciated having their own private spaces within the house. We ate breakfasts at home everyday to save money. We even utilized the grill (the rust may be a little off-putting, but is bound to happen so close to the salt water). Nearly everything you need for trips to the beach (beach chairs, towels, umbrellas etc.) was provided. Kekaha is a nice small town with friendly people. If you enjoy driving, plan to spend anywhere from 30 min. to 1.5 hours on the road depending on what area (Northshore, East, South) you want to visit. The beach directly across the street is great for watching surfers, sunsets and sunbathing. Poipu beach is about a 30-35 min. drive and is awesome for swimming. Overall a magnificent vacation home!

June 2021
Our family of four (myself, wife and 2 adult children) had a wonderful time at Shaka Hale. We knew we wanted to stay on the sunny west/south side of the island and originally targeted Poipu, but then found this listing which provided so much more room and amenities than what we would've received for our money in the more touristy area of Poipu Beach. It is more isolated and we needed to drive to restaurants, grocery stores and shops, but we typically prefer being removed from congested areas. The house sits directly across the street from the ocean and yes, as others have commented, there is substantial road noise including both commercial truck traffic as well as the natives who all seem to drive 4 wheel drive vehicles with large tires for off-roading, but this didn't detract from our stay although it is something to keep in mind. The other important point to consider is that depending on the time of year, there may be no beach directly across the street from the house. We visited late May and the waves crashed upon the rock wall across the street so we had to cross the street and walk maybe 150 feet to the east to access a small beach area, or we drove 1 mile west to Kekaha Beach Park which is a lovely, uncrowded beach with good surf, lifeguards, restrooms and covered picnic pavilions. In the winter you may find the beach across the street to look the way it does in the listing, but don't expect it to be there in the summer! Chad was extremely responsive and helpful throughout the booking process, check-in was a breeze, and the house was in perfect condition. I noted a couple minor items not even worth mentioning but Chad assured me he'd address them for future visitors. All in all a fabulous 5-night stay on Kauai (the first of three islands we visited) and we'd highly recommend this property to others.

This listing is perfect in every way with one small footnote. It is delightfully close to the ocean and is set on a well maintained garden lot across the street from the water. Our three couples were very comfortable with plenty of space to cook and eat together. There are several comfy areas to hang out, including a large screened lanai with views of the ocean through a couple of picturesque palms. We really enjoyed the dryish climate and proximity to Waimea Canyon and Polihale Beach Parks. The footnote: the cars and pickups on the 2-lane street between the house and the shore may be a little jarring to some. Despite that, we would definitely stay there again.

Meeting up with our grandson ..age 11.. after a year away. 8 days here wonderful! Very relaxing. Wonderful views, cool breezes. Fishing good right across the street.. surfing too. We originally booked north of Hanalei but couldn’t get there because of landslide and flooding. Chad was wonderful.. let us have a 4 day rental while we considered our options. But we liked the house and environs so much we just stayed put. Without even a request Chad gave us the 8 day rate. We highly recommend.. and hope to return in two years.

This house is exactly as pictured, if not better! I commented while overlooking the beach on the lanai that it felt as though I was in the VRBO listing’s picture. They had all the amenities we might need and more. Super clean house and property. Perfect for our 1.5 year old and 6 year olds. So much to do in that area, when we weren’t on a tour of the island, we hit up the beaches, went sea glass hunting across the street, and from the lanai we watched whales, the sun rise in the morning and set in the evening.

We thoroughly enjoyed every day 9 day stay in this luxury, well appointed home. There were 7 of us, 3 grandbabies, our daughter, me and my husband and our 83 year old mama. Mama enjoyed the ground floor bedroom, screened in porch and walk around deck. My husband and I enjoyed stepping outside on the deck above to drink our morning coffee and visit with the grandbabies running around. There was nothing that we needed that this house did not have including a friendly kitty that visited daily until her friendly owner came looking for her. Our visit was during the quarantine so if we weren't at the beach, we were at the house- all 7 of us, and we had plenty of room to relax and play and enjoy being together. The road noise in the morning is significant but we just turned on some Hawaiian music and it did improve throughout the day. We also enjoyed being able to walk to tennis courts a block down the road. I recommend this house for all ages as long as you can handle a flight on stairs if you don't get the downstairs bedroom. It is magnificent!

Our stay was great. The house was exactly as shown on the site. It was well appointed and was arranged in a way that you could relax in an area that fit whatever mood you were in. We loved the layout and the beautiful views of the ocean as we watched whales, dolphins and surfers.

Tons of outdoor living space, across the highway from Kekaha beach. The west side is lovely with much fewer tourists (and all that comes with them). You’re in a local neighborhood at Shaka Hale, just minutes from Waimea canyon road and Waimea town. If you like bodysurfing and boogieboarding you’ll probably need to walk south from the house by a 1/4 mile or so. We found the beach in front of the house to be great for sunbathing but difficult to swim in due to reef and coral. Kekaha beach was by far our favorite of the several beaches we checked out though so the short walk didn’t bother us. Overall an excellent stay, easy check in and out, clean and well stocked accommodations and everything we needed for our family of 6 within a couple miles. We ate most meals at home, choosing to stock the fridge and cook but we had lunch and dinner out 5 or six times and found all the south side restaurants to be good.

This was our first trip to any of the Hawaiian islands and it was exactly what we needed. We went to a few different beaches and found Kekaha to be the least populated and the most relaxing. Having that beach just steps from the front door was incredible. The house was clean and had everything we needed. We had an issue with the hot water heater and the property manager was there immediately to fix the problem. We’re already dreaming of our next trip. Thanks you for making this week one I’ll never forget. Mahalo!!

Wow. Great house in a perfect area. This is the second time we stayed in Kekaha in February and it was wonderful. There was rain one day but when it is 70 degrees outside, who cares (we live in the NW so we have to deal with cold rain and short days in Jan/Feb). The house had everything we needed to enjoy a nice family reunion. Would definitely stay here again. Seeing gray whales from the porch was very memorable.
