Maunaloa Shores 612 is a retreat that feels like home. This rental has recently been redone in tropical decor, accented by original artwork and there are comfortable armchairs both inside and out on the private lanai. Its central location makes walks to the beach to swim and relax just minutes away, or you can roam the farmer's market, shops, and many restaurants conveniently located nearby. There is also a shared, freshwater pool on-site if you'd rather stay close to home.

What's nearby:
Take a short walk to Carlsmith Park next door for a dip in the ocean where the lagoons create calm swimming areas and provide protection from the surf. The four-mile stretch of different swimming coves in this area (called Keaukaha) is a wonderful location to introduce children and newcomers to the water. Keep an eye out for our local Hawaiian monk seal 'mama' and her children who sometimes pop up on shore in this neighborhood, but don't disturb them as they are very endangered.

Things to know:
Free WiFi
Full kitchen (no dishwasher)
No air conditioning
Shared coin-op laundry facilities on each floor
Elevator in the building

The property was nice but we lost our keys during the Merrie Monarch festival. The door code was incorrect so we couldn't get in. The property manager did not have a spare key. Vacasa chat never replied. We were on hold for 45 minutes waiting for an agent to answer the phone. I actually found my keys in a hotel craft fair before I ever heard back from a Vacasa.

This unit was clean and fresh smelling. The kitchen was great, the lanai was awesome, the beds were very comfortable. But checking in was quite the obstacle. First, you have to go by the mailboxes and find a wooden cabinet with about 50 lockboxes. We were instructed to find the lockbox with a I on it. There is no uniform system, some aren’t marked, some have letters on the back, some have numbers on the sides. I had to hold 30 lockboxes and look for a letter. After inspecting about 30, I found ours with the unit number. It is a dim lit area, and had a small light in the cabinet, but I still recommend bringing a flashlight, especially when dark outside. In the lockbox there were three keys. None were marked as to what they went to. Every time you had to use the elevator you had to try 2 or 3 times. Did anyone think of putting labels on them? The door to our unit had a 10 key lockbox and had to be 25 years old. We stay at Vrbo all the time, so we are experienced with lockboxes. You have to hit each key directly on center, and it would time out in about 4 seconds. We had to call and get 2 different codes. After at least 30 tries, we made it in. Once we got in, it was a very nice place. Later that day we tried to get in and had the same problem. Communication was good, we got a fast response, buts it’s a faulty system. We wanted to go out later for a nice dinner, but we didn’t want to get locked out again. Such a nice place if you could just get in.

Property was nice. Frying pan had baked on black frying residue and was warped high in the middle. Wanted to watch TV, couldn't get it to work. Got to work once during the one day out of seven day stay, but never again. Overall a nice condo.

Located right next to Carlsmith Beach Park, with easy access from the pool to the beach. Safe, clean and friendly condo building. The resident manager is super friendly and helpful.

Property has all necessities. The pool looked stained at the bottom/not exactly inviting, and the apartment was clean but needed upkeep/mx items fixed. Otherwise, it was a solid place and a great price.

Nice and clean 2 bedroom property in a great location in Hilo. Next to a beach that you can walk to and close to 2 other beaches. Perfect for a family of 4 that wants to explore all the sites on the Hilo side. We enjoyed our stay here and would recommend this condo if you plan to visit Hilo.

Quiet. Right beside Carlsmith beach and turtles! Clean. Beds could use new mattresses. No air conditioning but the fans worked well for the week we were there

Beds were extremely uncomfortable. They taco’ed rolling us both into the middle. Horrible pillows. It was very hot but the fans were very loud but didn’t move the air at all. Annoyingly they only provide one key to get into the elevator, in/out pool and gate to beach. What if you are at the pool and one family member wants to go to the room, then everyone else would be stuck inside the gated pool as you need a key to exit that area as well as to get back up the elevator. Location was gorgeous though.

Not having access to the room when we arrived after a full day of travel was the worst. We could not find a motel with any vacancy, so we slept in the rental car the first night. We were able to gain access to the room around 9am the next day. We saw a couple roaches. We had to wash any dishes before we used them every time, because there was a cockroach in the utensil draw when we first opened it. Maunaloa shores is right next to the airport so it was very loud most of the time if the windows were open. No Air conditioning so we had to keep the windows open. The room was OK / clean. No TV in the bedrooms. and the radio did not work. The antenna was broken off.

conveniently located relative to Hilo airport and some of the key attractions such as volcano national park, akaka falls, rainbow falls, kamauna caves. also next to Carlsmith beach park and a few others. lot of dining options within 10 - 15 min driving distance near Hilo downtown. good amenities.. good experience overall except there were some ants in kitchen (though manageable by not keeping food outside)

The locations of this condo is so nice. But the furnitures, the decorations and kitchens facilities are so old. If you can update all these mentioned facilities, the condo will be nice and comfortable.

We loved the location. Views of Maunaloa were great when it wasn’t raining. It rained a lot! Only reason I’m not giving a 5 is because the dishes are way too high for my son and elderly mother to reach and there was some mold on the shower curtain. I would stay here again, though.

Quiet building, friendly residents. Othon the on-site contact was the best! We felt at home in our space.

The outside of the building isn’t much - needs some repair, fixing up in general. The unit, tho, is quite well done & cozy. Comfortable master bedroom & roomy 2nd bedroom. Full size kitchen & open dining, living area + balcony with a nice view. Great shower with plenty of hot water. Linen closet holds plenty of towels - very helpful. We felt like we were staying with folks who understand comfortable living. Also, close to multiple good eateries -especially Ken’s Pancakes & Don’s Grill. Thanks for a great stay!

The place was very clean (and for the ridiculous cleaning fee I paid - it should be). But the couch has a bunch of stains. Spilled drink? leaky diaper? Other bodily fluids? Owner should, at minimum, buy a cover for it if they can't replace it. Bedroom carpets are also stained, but they've obviously been cleaned a LOT because the carpets are "crunchy" from the dried cleaning solution.

Older building so expect for some insects to get in, a bit of ants just kept all our food in the fridge and had no issue. There is a coin op. laundry machine on same floor, ac fan worked great, it gets very hot during the day.

Nice apartment, met our needs. Love the easy access to Carlsmith beach park with swimming and snorkeling! The TV in the apartment didn’t appear to work.

Bedrooms were comfortable & spacious, kitchen items were well stocked. AC would have been nice, as it was quite warm the first week, and tie backs or clips for the curtains would have been convenient, only to control when/where the blazing sun would enter but enjoy the view and to keep out rain & still allow a breeze. I realize these are minor criticisms…it IS Hilo after all! The apartment was quiet (cinderblock walls), residents friendly, and in a great, removed-from-town location!

Great location but the room was hot and humid. The fans didn't do us justice to keep the condo cool. We were in the Big Island on business and coming from the main island some AC would of help after a long day of work. Overall the location is not upscale just a run down apartment complex.

You can't beat this location. Carlsmith Beach Park is right next door. The snorkeling here is great! The water is calm. And the honu (turtles) love it here as much as the humans do. We have traveled to most of the islands, and now live on Oahu. This was the 3rd time we have stayed at this property. It is our favorite place in Hawai'i.

This is a nice property in a great location surrounded by Carlsmith beach park, one of the prettiest spots in Hilo. The unit is small but great for two. More than 2 might be a bit claustrophobic if you are doing more than sleeping there. Property was clean and up to date. Biggest frustration was only one set of keys as you need keys to access elevator, pool and at night entrance to property. It means that all guests must be attached at the hip at all times. That doesn't work well for us. Also unit lacked some basics like an ice tray so there was no way to make ice and there is no place to get ice in this isolated neighborhood. There is only one beach chair provided. Bathroom towels were of poor quality. Overall a nice place in a good location and a solid value for the money. We would stay there again.

Good location. Access to park nearby great. Property manager is outstanding. Very helpful. The unit needs updating and cleaning. Saltwater rust on screen door and refrigerator need replacing. Carpets need cleaning. Drapes need fixing. Would return to another condo in the building. Love Hilo and we enjoyed our stay!!
