Waimea Canyon is Hawaii's version of the Grand Canyon although considerably smaller and much more colorful. This is one of Kauai's must see attractions. The canyon is roughly 10 miles long and 3,600 feet deep and the drive to the top offers several remarkable lookouts. Koke'e State Park here offers many outstanding hikes - it's best to consult a guide book to decide which hike will be most suitable and appealing (we recommend the hike that's at the very end of the road, the 2 mile Pihea trail that overlooks the Kalalau valley). The drive to Waimea Canyon is long, especially if you're staying on the north shore. Prepare for a full day trip. Arriving at the Canyon in the morning offers the best chances of clear weather, although the lighting for photo taking is best after lunch.
