Lumahai is one of Kauai's favorite scenic beaches. The photos below show the more popular eastern end of the beach (lower part of aerial photo). Access to this section is via a 5 minute trail through the forest. There are no signs marking the location of the trail, instead look for cars parked beside the road (you can refer to the following google map for the location).
Lumahai Safety
Lumahai is one of the most dangerous beaches on Kauai except during very calm summer days when the eastern most point may be suitable for swimming. Even then be cautious of currents. With no reef protection, the beach is exposed to open ocean and the full intensity of waves. Between 1970 and 2012 there were 23 drownings at Lumahai, 7 of those in summer months. In winter months people have even been swept off the beach by big waves. There are no lifeguards at Lumahai..
