This beach is part of Makena State Park - it's located just north of Big Beach. The sand is actually pepper colored. Swimming here isn't great - there's a lava rock bench in the water and an unpleasant beach break. Given the amazing choices of beaches in the area, the only reason to visit this one is to see the unusual colored sand. At one point it was possible to hike to the top of the crater behind the beach but that's no longer allowed.
Finding the entrance is difficult but the Tour Guide will tell you how to get there. The 450 yard dirt road to the beach is very bumpy and perhaps not suitable for some rental cars depending on recent weather..
